{"id":107,"date":"2009-03-05T13:32:09","date_gmt":"2009-03-05T18:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsbunn\/2009\/03\/05\/congratulations-to-alicia-soderberg\/"},"modified":"2009-03-08T12:19:14","modified_gmt":"2009-03-08T17:19:14","slug":"congratulations-to-alicia-soderberg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsbunn\/2009\/03\/05\/congratulations-to-alicia-soderberg\/","title":{"rendered":"Congratulations to Alicia Soderberg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cfa.harvard.edu\/~asoderberg\/\">Alicia Soderberg<\/a> is the winner of the 2009 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cfa.harvard.edu\/news\/2009\/pz200901.html\">Annie Jump Cannon award<\/a>.\u00a0 This very prestigious award is given by the American Astronomical Society to a female astronomer, at most 5 years post-Ph.D., for &#8220;outstanding research and promise for future research.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I taught Alicia when she was an undergraduate at Bates College.\u00a0 In fact, I think I was nominally the advisor for her senior thesis or something.\u00a0 I say &#8220;nominally,&#8221; because I really had little or nothing to do with it: her thesis work was with a group at Harvard, and she\u00a0 really worked with them, not me.\u00a0\u00a0 (Even so, I&#8217;m a bit embarrassed that I can&#8217;t remember for sure whether I was her advisor: I don&#8217;t think that there are any other students about whom I&#8217;m unsure whether I was\u00a0 their research advisor!)<\/p>\n<p>By the way, if you don&#8217;t know who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sdsc.edu\/ScienceWomen\/cannon.html\">Annie Jump Cannon<\/a> was, you should read about her.\u00a0 She did very important work in astronomy, figuring out the classification of stars that is still used today, at a time when women were largely excluded from science.
