What if I told you that you are probably familiar with a lot more classical pieces than you think because they often show up in the soundtracks of classic cartoons?  <\/p>\n<p>During the 1930s and 1940s, many practices from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Silent_film#:~:text=From%20the%20beginning%2C%20music%20was,wide%20range%20of%20special%20effects.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">silent film scoring<\/a> (often performed on piano or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wurlitzer#Theatre_organs\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">organ<\/a> in movie theaters), which often made use of classical pieces, made their way into cartoon shorts.  Use of this music was economical for the movie studios because much of it was public domain and therefore free of copyright restrictions.  Moreover, the use of &#8220;serious&#8221; classical music in silly cartoons often (literally &#038; figuratively) the humor of the cartoons.  <\/p>\n<p>Here are a few a few &#8220;greatest hits&#8221; pieces which found their way into a variety of cartoons. William Tell Overture<\/a><br \/>\nThe most famous bit of Rossini&#8217;s William Tell overture is the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/YIbYCOiETx0?si=10G9VuCVbdO2tEot\">finale<\/a> (aka the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lone_Ranger\">Lone Ranger Theme<\/a>&#8220;) &#8212; you&#8217;ll see it in scenarios featuring horseback riding among other things.<br \/>\nAnimated shorts featuring the finale include:  Disney&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Band_Concert\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Band Concert<\/a>&#8221; (1935) and Warner Brothers&#8217; &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/Bugs Bunny Rides Again\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bugs Bunny Rides Again<\/a>&#8221; (1948)<\/p>\n<p>Section 2 &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/cgUnIGFGtfg?si=RC10bB6qR2LhDY_0\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Storm<\/a>&#8221; and Section 3 &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/oFEDQXJ4vRQ?si=dpasSwgN5feSNfeJ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Call to the Cows<\/a>&#8221; regularly show up as well<br \/>\nFor example, Disney&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Band_Concert\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Band Concert<\/a> (again!) for a cartoon take on &#8220;The Storm&#8221; and both &#8220;The Storm&#8221; and &#8220;Call to the Cows&#8221; feature in Disney&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Old_Mill\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Old Mill<\/a>&#8221; (1947) &#038; Bugs Bunny in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhapsody_Rabbit\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rhapsody Rabbit<\/a>&#8221; (1946), for example<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/MhWRmtsPCdM?si=Phsi4zZxfiP2eb_W\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Franz Von Supp\u00e9 &#8211; &#8220;Light Cavalry Overture&#8221;<\/a><br \/>\nFeatures in animated shorts like Disney&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Symphony_Hour\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Symphony Hour<\/a>&#8221; (1942)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/vP06-7NGV8o?si=zV6J-Hzxs92yrlut\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Franz Von Supp\u00e9 &#8211; &#8220;Poet and Peasant Overture&#8221;<\/a><br \/>\nUsed, for example, in the Popeye short &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0027031\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Spinach Overture<\/a>&#8221; &#8220;An der sch\u00f6nen blauen Donau, Waltz, Op. 314&#8221;<\/a><br \/>\nStrauss&#8217;s &#8220;Blue Danube Waltz&#8221; also appears frequently for example in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_Corny_Concerto\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A Corny Concerto<\/a>&#8221; (1943) or &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johann_Mouse\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Johann Mouse<\/a>&#8221; (1953) <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7-9wXQpzESo?si=HQG6Kl3TZJVt6bGZ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Chopin &#8211; &#8220;Marche Fun\u00e8bre (Funeral March)&#8221; (from Piano Sonata No. 2)<\/a><br \/>\nChopin&#8217;s funeral march is a bit morbid and will be instantly recognizable, cartoon examples include &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/8QyOs-CHxgs\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scaredy Cat<\/a>&#8221; (1948) and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Convict_Concerto\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Convict Concerto<\/a>&#8221; (1954)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/xeRwBiu4wfQ?si=2EdHuXHTkixZj8pK\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Wagner &#8211; &#8220;Ride of the Valkyries&#8221;<\/a><br \/>\nThis one is used in one of my all-time favorite cartoons the 1957 classic &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/What%27s_Opera,_Doc%3F\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What&#8217;s Opera, Doc?<\/a>&#8221;
