Composed by Edward Elgar in the aftermath of World War I, <a href=\"https:\/\/richmond.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01URICH_INST\/1fl54dq\/alma993215453606241\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this concerto<\/a> first debuted in 1919 (the same year in which it was written). <\/p>\n<p>The work did not become a cornerstone of solo cello repertoire until a <a href=\"https:\/\/richmond.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01URICH_INST\/aqkk96\/alma9928077398406241\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recording<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/gmo\/9781561592630.article.08362\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jacqueline Du Pr\u00e9<\/a> caught the attention of the public. Her recording was so captivating that <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/gmo\/9781561592630.article.A2258083\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rostropovich<\/a> is said to have removed it from his own repertoire after hearing her play. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/richmond.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01URICH_INST\/1fl54dq\/alma993215453606241\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">This piece<\/a> is one of my favorite cello concertos, and while I also believe that no one can play this better than Du Pr\u00e9, I greatly enjoyed my time learning from this piece.
