Thanks, Nicole!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/richmond.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01URICH_INST\/191gg5k\/alma99104653606241\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;La flor de la canela&#8221; &#8211; Chabuca Granda<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.richmond.edu\/parsons\/files\/2022\/03\/La-Flor-de-La-Canela.jpg?resize=500%2C499\" alt=\"La Flor de la Canela\" width=\"500\" height=\"499\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3791\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/richmond.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01URICH_INST\/191gg5k\/alma99104653606241\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">La flor de la Canela<\/a>,\u201d which translates to: \u201c The Cinnamon flower\u201d in English, is a <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peruvian_waltz\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vals criollo<\/a><\/em> song first recorded by the group <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Morochucos\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Los Morochucos<\/a> in 1950, and later popularized by the singer and composer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/chabuca-granda-mn0000154191\/biography\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chabuca Granda<\/a> in the same year. Chabuca is a symbol of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/M%C3%BAsica_criolla\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">m\u00fasica criolla<\/a><\/em> in Peru, a genre that exhibits influences from European, African, and Andean music. <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3796\" style=\"width: 787px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3796\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.richmond.edu\/parsons\/files\/2022\/03\/ChabucaCantando.jpg?resize=577%2C515\" alt=\"Chabuca Cantando\" width=\"577\" height=\"515\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3796\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3796\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chabuca Grande singing on a Peruvian TV show circa 1960<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I have grown up hearing this popular song on the radio since it has become the unofficial anthem of the citizens of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lima\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lima<\/a>, the capital of Peru. The song also conveys a beautiful meaning. The expression itself, \u201cto be a cinnamon flower\u201d means to be proud and far from reach. <\/p>\n<p>Chabuca was inspired to write the song because of a friend who would always come to her performances, an African Peruvian woman named Victoria Angulo Castillo. During their meetings, Victoria would tell Chabuca about her journey home after the shows, crossing an old wooden bridge: \u201cel Viejo Puente de Palo\u201d. The lyrics tell the story of a young beautiful woman on her journey home.
