It also includes thumbnail biographical info on several Chilean musicians. <\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a little info on the music with some links to items in the library&#8217;s collection and a few video clips for good measure!<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>The traditional music of Chile is a rich mixture of Spanish and Pre-Columbian influences. <\/p>\n<p>Some of the traditional instruments commonly used in Chile include Andean instruments such as <\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.richmond.edu\/parsons\/files\/2021\/11\/Charango_boliviano.jpg?resize=400%2C300\" alt=\"Charango\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.richmond.edu\/parsons\/files\/2021\/11\/Charango_boliviano.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.richmond.edu\/parsons\/files\/2021\/11\/Charango_boliviano.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>* The <strong><em>charango<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; a small stringed instrument of the lute family.  It was traditionally made from armadillo shell, but is more commonly made of wood today. Men usually wear a traditional Chilean cowboy costume while women traditionally don a flowered dresses with an apron. <\/p>\n<p>Here is a video of a cueca performance:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2LgAbnsXaNQ\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And here is a <a href=\"https:\/\/richmond.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01URICH_INST\/10lhjt5\/cdi_oup_oro_10_1093_acref_9780190681173_013_0289\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">link to a reference article about the dance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nueva Canci\u00f3n Chilena<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the 1960s and 1970s, Chilean songwriters like Victor Jara and Violeta Parra used the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/gmo\/9781561592630.article.28099\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tonada<\/a> as a foundation of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/gmo\/9781561592630.article.52410\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nueva Canci\u00f3n<\/a>,\u201d explicitly political music that blended Chilean folk music with progressive politics, similar to the way Bob Dylan and Joan Baez led a political folk revival around the same time in the U.S. <\/p>\n<p>The foundations of nueva canci\u00f3n were laid by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/gmo\/9781561592630.article.49865\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Violeta Parra<\/a><\/strong> (1917-1967) who was a popular folk singer-songwriter and musicologist who researched and recovered the poetry and songs of rural Chile.   <\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.richmond.edu\/parsons\/files\/2021\/11\/Violeta-Parra.jpg?resize=300%2C300\" alt=\"Photograph of Violeta Parra\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.richmond.edu\/parsons\/files\/2021\/11\/Violeta-Parra.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.richmond.edu\/parsons\/files\/2021\/11\/Violeta-Parra.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.richmond.edu\/parsons\/files\/2021\/11\/Violeta-Parra.jpg?resize=301%2C300&amp;ssl=1 301w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.richmond.edu\/parsons\/files\/2021\/11\/Violeta-Parra.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/richmond.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/discovery\/search?query=any,contains,violeta%20parra&#038;tab=Everything&#038;search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&#038;vid=01URICH_INST:OneSearch&#038;offset=0\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The library owns several resources with information about her<\/a> and also a 2013 biopic about her called <em><a href=\"https:\/\/richmond.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01URICH_INST\/191gg5k\/alma9922397403606241\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Violeta se fu a los cielos (Violeta Went to Heaven)<\/a><\/em> that&#8217;s worth a look.
