This summer, my love of Bob Dylan was rekindled when I lived in Utah, as songs such as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bobdylan.com\/songs\/tangled-blue\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tangled up in Blue<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bobdylan.com\/songs\/shelter-storm\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shelter from the Storm<\/a>&#8221; were the perfect soundtrack for road trips with friends. In addition to loving Dylan\u2019s music, I am interested in him as a counterculture icon, political figure and individual, and particularly want to learn more about his role in the Civil Rights movement and Vietnam War.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1359\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1359\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.richmond.edu\/parsons\/files\/2017\/11\/Bob-Dylan-Newport-Folk-19651-300x200.jpg?resize=300%2C200&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Bob Dylan goes electric at the Newport Folk Festival 1965\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.richmond.edu\/parsons\/files\/2017\/11\/Bob-Dylan-Newport-Folk-19651.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.richmond.edu\/parsons\/files\/2017\/11\/Bob-Dylan-Newport-Folk-19651.jpg?resize=449%2C300&amp;ssl=1 449w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.richmond.edu\/parsons\/files\/2017\/11\/Bob-Dylan-Newport-Folk-19651.jpg?w=599&amp;ssl=1 599w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1359\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bob Dylan &#8220;goes electric&#8221; and inspires controversy at the Newport Folk Festival 1965<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As such, I am excited to explore <em><a href=\"https:\/\/librarycat.richmond.edu\/vwebv\/holdingsInfo?&#038;bibId=1389259\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Ballad of Bob Dylan<\/a><\/em>, a biography written by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danielmarkepstein.com\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Mark Epstein<\/a>. The book uses four formative concerts to examine Dylan\u2019s rise to fame, his shift from folk to rock music, and more personal aspects of his life and character. It includes interviews with those close to the singer-songwriter such as <a href=\"http:\/\/woodyguthrie.org\/norapress.htm\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nora Guthrie<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ramblinjack.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ramblin\u2019 Jack Elliot<\/a>, as well as lyrics from Dylan songs and poems. While there are many biographies about this \u201cvoice of a generation\u201d, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/librarycat.richmond.edu\/vwebv\/holdingsInfo?&#038;bibId=1389259\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Ballad of Bob Dylan<\/a><\/em> is accessible and comprehensive, allowing it to be the perfect read for a budding Dylan fan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Editor\u2019s note: Arachnophonia is a regular feature on our blog where members of the UR community can share their thoughts about items in the Parsons Music Library\u2018s collection.
