{"id":2066,"date":"2009-11-21T21:11:03","date_gmt":"2009-11-22T02:11:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/openwidelookinside\/archives\/2066"},"modified":"2009-11-21T21:11:03","modified_gmt":"2009-11-22T02:11:03","slug":"civil-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/openwidelookinside\/2009\/11\/21\/civil-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching History with Children&#8217;s Literature:  If You Lived At The Time Of The Civil War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\">\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.biblio.com\/z\/223\/454\/9780590454223.jpg\" height=\"163\" width=\"196\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A different time&#8230;a different place&#8230;What if you were there?<\/p>\n<p>If you lived at the time of the Civil War<br \/>\n-Would you have seen a battle?<br \/>\n-Did you continue to go to school?<br \/>\n-Was it hard to get food?<\/p>\n<p>Each day, decisions are made that touch you.\u00a0 Some you make, such as what you wear to school and eat for lunch.\u00a0 Some are made by others, such as when your mother makes a dentist appointment for you.\u00a0 You and your mother may not agree that you need to visit the dentist.\u00a0 What <em>you<\/em> believe is call your &#8220;point of view.&#8221;<br \/>\nHaving two different points of view does not mean that one person is all right and the other person all wrong.\u00a0 But deciding what point of view will be used is hard.\u00a0 Most problems can be solved by talking and each person giving in on some things.\u00a0 This is called a &#8220;compromise.&#8221;<br \/>\nHowever, there are times in history when a compromise cannot easily be reached.\u00a0 People look at the same questions about life and their answers are different.\u00a0 This book is about one of those times when different point of view led to war.<br \/>\nIt was a war that divided the nation.\u00a0 People had to decide whether to support the North of the South.<br \/>\nThe war has been called the brothers&#8217; war because families fought both sides.\u00a0 It also has been called the children&#8217;s crusade because children as young as nine years old were part of it.\u00a0 It touched the lives of all who lived through it no matter what their age or where they lived.\u00a0 It changed life in the United States forever.\u00a0 It is known as the Civil War.
