{"id":1790,"date":"2009-09-22T04:57:58","date_gmt":"2009-09-22T09:57:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/openwidelookinside\/archives\/1790"},"modified":"2009-09-22T04:57:58","modified_gmt":"2009-09-22T09:57:58","slug":"teaching-earth-science-with-childrens-literature-cloudy-with-a-chance-of-meatballs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/openwidelookinside\/2009\/09\/22\/teaching-earth-science-with-childrens-literature-cloudy-with-a-chance-of-meatballs\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Earth Science with Children&#8217;s Literature:  Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/openwidelookinside\/files\/2009\/09\/61y65s0626l__ss400_.jpg\" title=\"61y65s0626l__ss400_.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/openwidelookinside\/files\/2009\/09\/61y65s0626l__ss400_.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"61y65s0626l__ss400_.jpg\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If food dropped like rain from the sky, wouldn&#8217;t it be marvelous!\u00a0 Or would it?\u00a0 It could, after all, be messy.\u00a0 And you&#8217;s have no choice.\u00a0 What if you didn&#8217;t like what fell?\u00a0 Or what if too much came?\u00a0 have you ever thought of what is might be like to be squashed flat by a pancake?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Cloudy-Chance-Meatballs-Judi-Barrett\/dp\/0689306474\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1253374438&amp;sr=1-1\" title=\"Cloudy With a Change of Meatballs\"><em>Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0 written by Judi Barrett and drawn by Ron Barrett is a book about the tiny town of Chewandswallow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0It\u00a0was very much like any other tiny town except for its weather which came three times a day, at breakfast lunch and dinner.\u00a0 It never rained rain, snowed snow, or blew just wind.\u00a0 It rained things like soup and juice.\u00a0 It snowed things like mashed potatoes.\u00a0 And sometimes the wind blew in storms of hamburgers.<\/p>\n<p>Life for the townspeople was delicious until the weather took a turn for the worse.\u00a0 The food got larger and larger and so did the portions.\u00a0 Chewandswallow was plagued by damaging floods and storms of huge food.\u00a0 The town was a mess and the people feared for their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Something had to be done, and in a hurry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Excepts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Across the ocean, over lots of huge bumpy mountains, across three hot deserts, and one smaller ocean&#8230;&#8230;there lay the tiny town of Chewandswallow&#8221;. (pg 6-7)<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the weather served, that was what they ate. (pg 9)<\/p>\n<p>For lunch onde day, franfurters, already in their rolls, blew in from the northwest at abou five miles an hour.
