Is There a Line?

Aside from ensuring the best possible branding and due to time constraints, one of the reasons musicians often hire teams to assist with their social media is to protect from potential ramifications of oversharing information (Dubroff). While artists remain apprehensive to share certain personal information in order to secure privacy, over time the limits of privacy have seemed to have decreased. For instance, after Carrie Underwood’s first child, Isaiah, was born in 2015, she waited an entire month to release more than an image of his hand in order to protect their privacy (See Figure 14 Below). However, this past January when her second son, Jacob, was born, she shared photos of him only three days later (See Figure 15 Below). Since fans have been increasingly requiring more personalized content from artists, artists are also becoming increasingly translucent with content in order to establish the necessary connections with fans that help generate revenue. The difference in the amount of time after their births before Underwood shared images in 2015 versus in 2019 may further hint at the changing landscape of sharing personal content to foster artist-brands and fan-connections.
