“Toxic” (2003) – Britney Spears

Britney Spears on Tour

Born in a small Louisiana town, Britney Spears showed interest in singing and performing at a young age (Brown 2016). Spears and her singing abilities were introduced to the public eye during Star Search when she performed “Love can build a bridge.” While she was not deemed the winner of this contest, taking part in this competition gave way for Spears to have the opportunity to act and sing on The Mickey Mouse Club. Furthermore, in releasing her debut album, Baby One More Time (1999), Spears attained international recognition as a solo artist (Brown 2016). After releasing her self-titled, Grammy-winning album, Britney (2001), Spears collaborated with Swedish producers Bloodshy & Avant to release her fourth studio album, In the Zone (2003). In the Zone (2003) opened to door for Spears to create more mature dance-pop for her fans (Brown 2016). Unfortunately, Spears became addicted to drugs and was hospitalized due to drug-related issues (Idato 2021). Then, following an emergency court session, Spears lost custody of her children and was forced under her father’s “conservatorship,” losing control of her person and her artistry as a female pop star.
