Biggie Smalls (Christopher George Latore Wallace) was born May 21st, 1972 in Brooklyn New York. Biggie Smalls was discovered by his neighbor Donald Harrison, who was a jazz saxophonist, while he was sitting on a stoop sinning and rapping with his friends. Harrison took Biggie under his wing and taught him to skat along with other jazz vocal technics like swinging notes. Biggie was seen as a promising kid who could choose any career and work hard to get there if he tried especially with his mom being a teacher. However, Biggie was tempted by the street life, and hopes of a normal 9-5 career soon diminished. Biggie dropped out of high school after freshmen year, he then turned to selling drugs and participating in street life. Even at the street corners where he would wait to exchange drugs for money Biggie could be heard freestyle rapping. Biggie eventually made a mixtape which was received by Puff Daddy who signed Biggie to a record deal in 1993. Biggie only released two albums in his time but he was still widely influential, rapper AZ said “Everybody took a piece out of Big (Biggie Smalls) that’s on the charts right now. Everybody.”. Sadly, Biggie Smalls was assassinated on March 9th, 1997 at the young age of 24.
