Daft Punk is iconic for their outfits, and many current artists have taken upon their style, such as Marshmallo and Deadmau5. In an interview for Rolling Stone, Deadmau5 praises the duo for their Iconic Coachella pyramid performance: “I can count on one hand, how many times those things have happened,” Deadmau5 claims Daft Punk’s Pyramid was one of “those things”, or moments which break genres and stay in people’s collective memory, “That’s my goal: to be the guy who unveils that crazy f**king thing that people s[ee]”. Similarly, dubstep legend Skrillex claims that seeing Daft Punk’s Pyramid “changed [his] life”. Apart from their music, they have had a profound impact on the electronic scene in France and the US and on music listeners of varied cultures.

Although their distortion of sounds, vocals, and drums was extremely innovative, their audience was truly hooked by how they presented themselves and interacted with their audience. Since the duo’s last tour was the year after their Coachella performance, allowing our audience to view their immense development in a handful of years will be a marker in sighting their success. Daft Punk had a slow exit from the spotlight, ending with their video, “Epilogue”, concluding the group’s twenty-eight-year tenure, but left an incredible legacy that will continue to inspire all generations to come.
Though they exited the spotlight from performing, their legendary sound lives on in modern music because of its remix-ability. The video showcases how Kanye kept the Daft punk sound while adding his own twist that allowed it to resonate with larger audiences. Most notably, Kanye slowed the bpm to a more classic hip hop tempo, as well as deepening and slowing the vocals to create a darker, grittier tone.
Kanye told Tim Westwood that his superiors claimed the Daft Punk sample wouldn’t “connect with black people” and that it would only be a club hit. Kanye’s use of Daft Punk’s timeless and endlessly catchy riffs and lyrics showed that the group could resonate with an audience outside of club and house music. With the help of Daft Punk’s sample, Kanye created one of hiphop’s most anthemic beats of all time, evidenced by the songs commercial success over the past 15 years.
