Through their 2006 Coachella performance and their 2006 Grammy performance, Daft Punk utilized technology such as synths, interactive and revolutionary set design, and self-expression in their outfits to create a popular wave in EDM. Captured through future EDM performances and sales figures within the genre, Daft Punk’s performance clearly had monumental impacts on the genre. This is significant because they were able to innovate a new chapter into modern-day dance music by becoming trailblazers through their revolutionary live performances that captivated audiences never before seen in the genre.

Capitalizing on the house movement in Paris, the duo created a new audience of listeners with their incorporation of different genres and sounds such as pop and hip/hop. Daft Punk used certain frequencies to change the sound’s character in regards to making its tempo and forte. Through the use of synth filters, Daft Punk turned sampling into a form of instrumentation. The duo were early adopters of synth machines like the Roland Juno-106, which they utilized to make their signature sound that utilized 80s disco samples in combination with their futuristic synths to create a completely new and revolutionary sound in EDM. Their early 2001 album Discovery in particular bent EDM genre norms by over-utilizing synths to create a super complex and robotic sound. On top of this utilization of synths, the vocal samples from Discovery were chopped up in a way where the duo only used very small portions of lyrics and looped them to create continuation of the sound. Along with chopping and looping these sampled vocals, the duo utilized heavy distortion to completely change the sound of the sample. In addition to revolutionizing the use of synthesizers and sampling, Daft Punk’s mythical ethos exhibited the duo’s ability to captivate large audiences never before seen in the EDM genre. Looking at Daft Punk’s live performances, musical elements, and impact, they reveal their importance to growth in electronic music.
