Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ is known for its unusual sound combinations that make it the most unique song on the album. The introduction and verses have a distinct “bell-like” sound that is created through a Lowrey organ. The Lowrey organ is an electronic organ named after the developer, Frederick Lowrey. George Martin and the Beatles were able to get the sound to blend seamlessly through the use of a tambura drone, which allowed the music to sound as if it was coming from one sound-producing device. The song also has an organ, which plays backbeat chords in the chorus. The rest of the song is made up through cymbals in verses and the pre-choruses, bass guitar played throughout the entire song, starting with the first verse, drums that are in all choruses, and finally, two different guitar sounds one being in the pre-choruses and the other in all choruses. A key focus of the song is that George Harrison’s guitar was routed through a Leslie speaker during the choruses in order to obtain an effect similar to flanging. This allows the other guitar that follows to have a soft fuzzy quality in the pre-chorus and sounds as if the attack has been softened electronically.

“The complex manipulation of tape speeds during the tape transfer and the overdubbing of the lead and backing vocals gives Lennon’s voice an almost feminine sound quality” (Julien 2008, p. 50). The song includes natural double-tracking of Lennon’s voice, which is used at the end of each verse. The double-tracking gives off an echoing effect that is applied liberally in order to achieve a spacey hallucinogenic feeling. “The mix itself seems performed in the spirit of an acid trip, with a particular disconnection between right and left fields” (Julien 2008, p. 50). The break up of this song consists of cymbals, drums, tambura, acoustic guitar, and organ played on the left and the two different electric guitar sounds are entirely on the right. The Beatles decided to only have vocals and bass guitar spread across both sides in order to “marry” the sounds together.

‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ has a very interesting acronym as it makes out the letters “LSD”. According to Ringo Starr, this acronym was unintentional, however many people have had their own speculations on whether or not this is true. Many people have this speculation due to the music video that went along with the song. The video contains many extravagant images that seem to be LSD like. On the other hand, people have viewed the images very differently. Some critics suggest “the song makes more sense as a ‘revocation of the dream-world of childhood’ than as an LSD song”(Moore 1997, p. 33). This song title remains a mystery, however, it is highly speculated LSD had a major influence on not only this song but the album.
