There is a na\u00efve presumption that we are original, that is formulate our own thoughts and actions. However, there is a sameness in our culture which leads to standardization.<\/p>\n<p><u>Adorno\/Horkheimer<\/u><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Culture today is infecting everything with sameness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll mass culture under monopoly is identical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevance to Media<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Causes<\/b> of standardization in relation to media studies:<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cOwnership of the media has become so concentrated that by the mid-2000s only <b>five<\/b> global firms dominated the media industry in the United States.\u201d (Crouteau, 33)<\/p>\n<p>-Film, radio, and magazines form a system.\u201d (Adorno, 2)<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cDynamic tensions between the forces of structure that shape but do no determine behavior, and the actions of human beings, who make choices but not fully autonomous.\u201d (Croteau,113)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-132\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/mcifall2017\/files\/2017\/12\/Chart-Media-Monoplies-300x185.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/mcifall2017\/files\/2017\/12\/Chart-Media-Monoplies-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/mcifall2017\/files\/2017\/12\/Chart-Media-Monoplies.png 559w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dictionary: The process of making something conform to a standard.
