Now we would like to talk about knowledge of sequences of functions and their application in the real life. First lets look at the definition of sequences of functions. Suppose <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=S+%5Csubset+%5Cmathbb%7BR%7D&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"S &#92;subset &#92;mathbb{R}\" class=\"latex\" \/> and for all <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=n+%5Cin+%5Cmathbb%7BN%7D&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"n &#92;in &#92;mathbb{N}\" class=\"latex\" \/> there is a function <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=f_n%3A+S%5Crightarrow+%5Cmathbb%7BR%7D&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"f_n: S&#92;rightarrow &#92;mathbb{R}\" class=\"latex\" \/>. The collection {<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=f_n%3A+n+%5Cin+%5Cmathbb%7BN%7D&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"f_n: n &#92;in &#92;mathbb{N}\" class=\"latex\" \/>} is a sequence of function defined on <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=S&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"S\" class=\"latex\" \/>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Point-wise Convergence and Uniform Convergence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the textbook, we learnt that the definition of Point-wise Convergence is: Let <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=f_n&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"f_n\" class=\"latex\" \/> be a defined function on <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=A+%5Csubseteq+%5Cmathbb%7BR%7D&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"A &#92;subseteq &#92;mathbb{R}\" class=\"latex\" \/>. In reality,\u00a0&#8216;signals&#8217; are real world parameters such as heat, sounds, temperature, pressure and lights etc. A signal is a real (or complex) valued function of one or more real variable(s).It follows that some &#8216;transformer&#8217; convert the signal into electrical energy. Let us denote the signal by x(t). The variable t is called independent variable and the value x of t as dependent variable. We say a signal is continuous time signal if the independent variable t takes values in an interval. For example t (\u2212\u221e,\u221e), or t [0,\u221e] or t [T0, T1] The independent variable t is referred to as time,even though it may not be actually time. For example in variation if pressure with height t refers above mean sea level. When t takes a vales in a countable set the signal is called a discrete time signal. For example t {0,T, 2T, 3T, 4T, &#8230;} or t {&#8230;\u22121, 0, 1, &#8230;} or t {1\/2, 3\/2, 5\/2, 7\/2, &#8230;} etc<\/p>\n<p>Before talking about how\u00a0sequences of functions got\u00a0involved in this process, we need to talk about\u00a0delta\u00a0function. It is defined as <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=%5Cvec+%7B%5Cdelta%7D+%28x%29+%3D%5Cbegin%7Bcases%7D+1%C2%A0%26+t+%3D+0%5C%5C+0+%26+t+%5Cneq+0+%5Cend%7Bcases%7D%C2%A0&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"&#92;vec {&#92;delta} (x) =&#92;begin{cases} 1\u00a0&amp; t = 0&#92;&#92; 0 &amp; t &#92;neq 0 &#92;end{cases}\u00a0\" class=\"latex\" \/>. When you zoom into the plot, the delta function works by trying to &#8216;recover&#8217; an exact signal when we sample only discrete values of t. And the &#8216;recovery&#8217; tool is integration. In Signal Processing, Fourier Transform would produce sequences based on the amplitude and frequency of the waves of the signal received. And by taking integrations of the sequences that involve delta function, we would have zero as the result, essentially not giving any information helpful of the signal.This came to the motivation to use sequences of function\u00a0, as we mentioned,\u00a0the integration of the delta function <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=%5Cint_%7B%5Cinfty%7D%5E%7B%5Cinfty%7D+%5Cdelta+%28t%29dt+%3D+0&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"&#92;int_{&#92;infty}^{&#92;infty} &#92;delta (t)dt = 0\" class=\"latex\" \/>.This tool used for signal processing is not good for telling us about what information about the signal being processed. So we would need setting that\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=%5Cint_%7B%5Cinfty%7D%5E%7B%5Cinfty%7D+%5Cdelta+%28t%29dt+%5Cneq+0&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"&#92;int_{&#92;infty}^{&#92;infty} &#92;delta (t)dt &#92;neq 0\" class=\"latex\" \/>. Thus define a new function as rect(t)=<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=%5Cbegin%7Bcases%7D+1+%26+x+%5Cin+%5B-%5Cfrac%7B1%7D%7B2%7D%2C%5Cfrac%7B1%7D%7B2%7D%5D%5C%5C+0+%26+elsewhere+%5Cend%7Bcases%7D&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"&#92;begin{cases} 1 &amp; x &#92;in [-&#92;frac{1}{2},&#92;frac{1}{2}]&#92;&#92; 0 &amp; elsewhere &#92;end{cases}\" class=\"latex\" \/> . Now consider the sequence of functions <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=%5Cdelta_n%28t%29%3D+n%2A+rect%28nt%29&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"&#92;delta_n(t)= n* rect(nt)\" class=\"latex\" \/>. This sequence of function is point-wise convergent to 0\u00a0except when <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=t+%3D0&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"t =0\" class=\"latex\" \/>. If we plot out the graph of function, <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=%5Cint_%7B%5Cinfty%7D%5E%7B%5Cinfty%7D+%5Cdelta_n+%28t%29dt&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"&#92;int_{&#92;infty}^{&#92;infty} &#92;delta_n (t)dt\" class=\"latex\" \/> is area of the box and this would lead to <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=%5Cint_%7B%5Cinfty%7D%5E%7B%5Cinfty%7D+%5Cdelta_n+%28t%29dt+%3D1&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"&#92;int_{&#92;infty}^{&#92;infty} &#92;delta_n (t)dt =1\" class=\"latex\" \/>.This would gives us some insight of getting the information of the signal that we received compared with the Dirac Delta Function.
