Gay is out

Why is being gay considered outside the man box? I guess that would mean not being gay as considered inside the “what does it mean to be a man” box.  Which goes back to ages and ages of human history where we needed to propagate to insure the continuation of our species, which meant that men had to sleep with women, thus entering heterosexual relationships.  Man went with woman, man had children to insure the continuation of his interests, humans increased.  Of course, it was many years ago that our species became stable. And even before that, there were most likely homosexual relationships.  We just don’t know to what extent. And what humans don’t know usually scares them.

The society that I’m reminded of immediately upon considering homosexual relationships is Ancient Greece where homoerotic relationships blossomed as a natural and accepted factor of student-teacher lessons.  While I’m not sure our society could, at the moment, support that type of power relationship specifically, it does show us that homosexual relationships have been normalized and a part of society since an early age.

Maybe it’s as simple as the idea that gay men often portray more feminine traits, and our society has developed such a polarized view on the whole masculine/feminine issue that we no longer recognized any intermediary, which has only recently begun to be resolved.
