Are you for Cyri(a)l, Nestorius?

Dyophysite Christology is the belief that there are two persons of Christ–the human and the divine. This is an extreme view or a misunderstanding of what Nestorius believed. Nestorius believed in two natures of Jesus in the one, 2nd person of the Trinity. Nestorius believed that Jesus needed to be both fully divine and fully human in order for the fully fallen humans to be saved. Cyril held the view that there was one nature of Christ. The two were mostly in conflict due to political power struggles. Also wrapped up in this discussion was mariology or the study of who the Virgin Mary is. Nestorius thought that Mary could not be called “mother of God” because God could not have been born. He wants her to be called “mother of Christ.”
