Created in 2012 and now a \u201cquarantined\u201d community on Reddit for its dedication to \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/TheRedPill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shocking or highly offensive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d content, it started as a thread with only a few followers.\u00a0Within a year the thread had over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/the-red-pill-reddit-2013-8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15,000 followers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cred pill\u201d is a reference to the movie\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Matrix<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, specifically, to a scene where Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus) presents two options to Keanu Reeves (Neo): \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2016\/apr\/14\/the-red-pill-reddit-modern-misogyny-manosphere-men\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you take the blue pill \u2013 the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill \u2013 you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d\u00a0The people who have \u201cswallowed\u201d the red pill believe that women \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2016\/apr\/14\/the-red-pill-reddit-modern-misogyny-manosphere-men\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women run the world without taking responsibility for it, and that their male victims are not permitted to complain.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d\u00a0Their \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/the-red-pill-reddit-2013-8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manifesto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d is called the Misandry Bubble.\u00a0They argue that men have been socially disenfranchised but they \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2017\/12\/brotherhood-of-losers\/544158\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">become too meek to stand up to their women.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d\u00a0In it, users spewed a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2017\/12\/brotherhood-of-losers\/544158\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mix of virulent misogyny and retrograde dating advice.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[vii]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0As one red-piller wrote in the forum, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/the-red-pill-reddit-2013-8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are, by nature, manipulative, attention-seeking, inconsistent, emotional, and hypergamous. Accept this truth. Once you do, you can game women for what they are \u2026 not what you want them to be<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Users of \/r\/TheRedPill have a specific set of vocabulary within the forum, while, at the same time, the thread has popularized some of the alt-right\u2019s most-used terminology. In discussions, they use terms such as \u201cthe wall,\u201d or the point at which a woman\u2019s \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/the-red-pill-reddit-2013-8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ego and self-assessed view of her sexual market value exceed her actual sexual market value; the beginning of the decline.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Another term is\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MGTOW \u2013 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the acronym\u00a0for \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/the-red-pill-reddit-2013-8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">men going their own way.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d This group of people is committed to shunning relationships of all kinds with women. One term that has reached the public sphere is cuck, the short version of cuckold. The word \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/europe\/8133615.stm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cuckold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comes from the old French word for a cuckoo (&#8220;cucu&#8221;) bird. In some species of cuckoo, the females lay eggs in other nests and leave the eggs for another bird to raise. The word transformed to become the word \u201ccuckold\u201d in the Middle Ages, which was the word for a husband with an errant wife. Many of Shakespeare\u2019s characters believed they had become a \u201ccuckold,\u201d and many others used insults such as, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/europe\/8133615.stm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crooked-pated old cuckoldy ram.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d For the alt-right, they first used the word to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describe an emasculated man, and it turned into the insult for conservatives who were \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2017\/12\/brotherhood-of-losers\/544158\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weak on immigration, or just weak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While not all members of the alt-right are also misogynists, these sentiments regarding women are a large part of many alt-righters\u2019 belief systems.\u00a0 The tie between misogyny and the alt-right is strong, as one of the main beliefs of the alt-right is modern society\u2019s mistreatment of white men. Because members of the alt-right score higher on social dominance orientation and believe in the superiority of the white man, they are more likely to act on their beliefs that society should return to a world where women are much less powerful than men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The phrase that once only applied to people who are victims of a society run by women has come to apply to all people who believe in the alt-right movement. Today, \u201ctaking the red pill\u201d or \u201cbeing red-pilled\u201d is another way to say you subscribe to the beliefs of the alt-right. In November 2016, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vice<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> author Mike Pearl wrote an article entitled \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/nnk3bm\/how-to-tell-if-your-alt-right-relative-is-trying-to-redpill-you-at-thanksgiving\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Tell if Your Alt-Right Relative Is Trying to Redpill You at Thanksgiving<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d full of warnings about conversation topics regarding the 2016 election and points that your \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/nnk3bm\/how-to-tell-if-your-alt-right-relative-is-trying-to-redpill-you-at-thanksgiving\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">racist uncle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d would probably make.\u00a0One of the alt-right\u2019s most popular phrases had now entered popular vernacular, thanks to the election of Donald Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/ldst490li\/section-iv-platforms-of-the-alt-right\/\">Previous Page<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/ldst490li\/section-vi-the-alt-right-becomes-visible\/\">Next Page<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One particular thread on Reddit, \/r\/TheRedPill, was one of the first alt-right communities that gained significant traction on the Internet.
