I think it will be very relevant to my thesis; I&#8217;m glad I took very thorough notes. In terms of the note-taking, I don&#8217;t feel as though I did anything very different from how I usually take notes. I usually try to include page numbers and citations. I usually include the content of the article as well as my own thoughts and questions. However, I don&#8217;t always type up my notes so thoroughly. I&#8217;m worried that I will be too thorough with every source I read. What I need to work on is reading more aggressively, only focusing on the relevant information, or else I will never finish this project.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cNot a Laughing Matter: Sexual Harassment as \u2018Material\u2019 on Workplace-Based Situation Comedies\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Montemurro, Beth. &#8220;Not a Laughing Matter: Sexual Harassment as \u201cMaterial\u201d on Workplace-Based Situation Comedies.&#8221;\u00a0<em>Sex Roles <\/em>48, no. 9\/10 (2003): 433-445.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract:<\/strong> \u201cIn her book <em>Sexual Harassment of Working Women<\/em> Catherine MacKinnon (1979) suggested that \u2018Trivialization of sexual harassment has been a major means through which its invisibility has been enforced. Humor, which may reflect unconscious hostility, has been a major form of that trivialization\u2019 (p. 52). In other words, making jokes at women&#8217;s expense and treating sexual harassment as not serious have contributed to its persistence. Situation comedies can be seen as gauges for what is considered humorous in American culture. To explore the tone of and mood toward sexual harassment in contemporary American society, themes and content of \u2018humorous\u2019 material on 56 episodes of five workplace-based situation comedies were examined. Results showed that although sexual harassment is rarely discussed on situation comedies, gender harassment is frequently used as \u2018material,\u2019 which leads to further trivialization of a serious social problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Main idea: Sexual harassment as \u201chumorous material\u201d on situation comedies contributes to the trivialization of sexual harassment in American society.<\/li>\n<li>Questions:\n<ul>\n<li>What is the difference between \u201cgender harassment\u201d and \u201csexual harassment\u201d? (Montemurro, 433)<\/li>\n<li>What does MacKinnon mean when she says that humor \u201c\u2018may reflect unconscious hostility\u2019\u201d? (MacKinnon, 52, cited in Montemurro, 433)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reading Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>Introduction<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Television has a profound impact on Americans\u2019 \u201cperceptions of gender roles and other social issues\u201d (Montemurro, 433).\n<ul>\n<li>She cites several studies that have shown this<\/li>\n<li>Justifying the study of television (its profound sociological impact is undeniable, p. 433)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>In making jokes about social issues, sitcoms trivialize the problems (Montemurro, 433 (citing Grauerholtz and King))<\/li>\n<li>Sitcoms also reinforce \u201cstereotypes and negative images\/perceptions of serious topics\u201d (Montemurro, 434 (citing Fouts and Burggraf)<\/li>\n<li>Problems with making jokes about sexual harassment:\n<ul>\n<li>Definition of sexual harassment becomes \u201cclouded\u201d (434)<\/li>\n<li>Sexual harassment not seen as a serious issue (434)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Why does it matter?\n<ul>\n<li>Sexual harassment in the workplace perpetuates women\u2019s status as \u201csubordinate workers and second class citizens\u201d (434)<\/li>\n<li>Women not employees, but \u201cobjects\/bodies\u201d (434, citing Acker)<\/li>\n<li>When we see sitcoms portray instances of sexual harassment in a humorous way time and time again, this maintains women\u2019s \u201csubordinate status\u201d (434, citing Grauerholz and King, hooks, and Jhally)\n<ul>\n<li>QUESTION: Does this have to do with the content specifically, or the repeated viewing of that content and subsequent internalization of the message?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Also, \u201cportrayals of women and work on prime-time programs depict women as less serious workers\u201d (434, citing Vande Berg and Streckfuss)<\/li>\n<li>The effect on children\n<ul>\n<li>Young boys less likely to interpret material of sexual harassment as negative (434, citing Murnen and Smolak)<\/li>\n<li>Children learn this behavior, contributing to the maintenance of the issue\n<ul>\n<li>QUESTION: How much do I want to focus on the child\/early socialization aspect? I feel as though it might be a rabbit hole I could easily fall down.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Ford\u2019s study (cited on page 436)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Montemurro\u2019s Purpose and Methods of Inquiry:\n<ul>\n<li>Wants to determine \u201cwhether sexual harassment is present, prevalent, and\/or trivialized\u201d (434)<\/li>\n<li>Wants to question \u201cwhether sexual harassment is being used as humorous material on situation comedies\u201d\n<ul>\n<li>Hypothesis: it is. (based on previous studies: Dow, Fouts and Burggraf, Grauerholz and King, Signorielli)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Addresses the following issues\n<ul>\n<li>Frequency of sexual harassment as material in sitcoms<\/li>\n<li>In what form is sexual harassment depicted? Is it explicit or implicit?<\/li>\n<li>Does the \u201cgender composition of the televised workplace\u201d affect how sexual harassment is treated on the show?\n<ul>\n<li>My question is similar, but focuses on female <em>leadership<\/em> in particular<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>How does the workplace environment affect the frequency of sexual harassment?\n<ul>\n<li>This is a question I could ask as well. There is more \u201copportunity\u201d for sexual harassment on the set of a TV show (a la <em>30 Rock<\/em>) than there is in a paper company office (<em>The Office<\/em>) (Although plenty of sexual harassment seems to happen on both shows)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>\u201cDefining Sexual Harassment\u201d<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sexual harassment is prevalent; women experience more sexual harassment than men\n<ul>\n<li>She cites several studies here. I could refer to those as well, but most of them were published in the 90s. I think I can definitely find more recent studies that also state that sexual harassment is still prevalent (obviously).<\/li>\n<li>I can also use more \u201cpopular\u201d sources here, referring to highly publicized instances of sexual harassment (Weinstein, Fox News, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>QUESTION: She states <em>why<\/em> sexual harassment is problematic \u2013 is this something I need to do? Can I just assume that in 2018, my audience will know that sexual harassment is problematic?<\/li>\n<li>Different types of sexual harassment (feminist scholars)\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cSexual harassment\u201d \u2013 \u201cQuid pro quo\u201d \u2013 \u201cclear demand of sexual favors in return for work related benefits\u201d (435), \u201c\u2019turning a professional relationship into a sexual relationship that is not wanted by one of the people involved that is coercive because the initiator has some power over the other person\u2019\u201d (435, quoting Lorber, p. 250)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGender harassment\u201d \u2013 \u201ccondition of work\/hostile environment\u201d (435), \u201c\u2019inappropriately calling attention to women\u2019s or men\u2019s bodies, sexuality or marital status\u201d (435, quoting Lorber, p. 250)\n<ul>\n<li>Using person\u2019s gender to point out \u201cthe individual\u2019s capabilities or career commitment\u201d (434, quoting Lorber, p. 250)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Important to know the difference between the two in order to properly discuss the issue\n<ul>\n<li>It is a complex and often ambiguous issue; using it as humorous material perpetuatues this ambiguity (435)<\/li>\n<li>QUESTION: what do I want to focus on?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>\u201cWomen on Television\u201d<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Important to study audience reactions because \u201ctelevision\u2026 often functions to connect individuals to the larger social world\u201d (435, citing Press)\n<ul>\n<li>QUESTION: How much do I want to focus on audience reactions\/perceptions? I think I might want to focus more on the content of the shows\u2026 but I also think it is important to analyze the effect of the content on the viewers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Correlation between acceptance of \u201cfeminist\u201d TV characters and \u201cgeneral societal attitudes toward feminism and the women\u2019s movement\u201d (435, citing Dow)\n<ul>\n<li>QUESTION: Can some shows be ahead of their time (i.e. too \u201cprogressive\u201d for mainstream societal standards) and still succeed?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Montemurro cites a 2000 study that analyzed images of women in sitcoms in terms of their weight. The study found that heavier women were treated more negatively than thinner women (and that the laugh tracks used reinforced these \u201cstereotypic values\u201d (436, quoting Fouts and Burggraf)\n<ul>\n<li>Interesting idea, but I\u2019m not sure it\u2019s relevant because of its outdated-ness. Perhaps I can find a more recent study that touches on this idea? I can certainly think of a lot of instances in my TV shows that portray heavier women in a negative way for laughs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Montemurro looking in depth at five different programs, watching them first to gain an understanding of the characters\u2019 relationship and context\n<ul>\n<li>Context is crucial \u2013 two characters might already have \u201can established flirting pattern\u201d that makes what could be interpreted as sexual harassment tolerable in context (436)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Looking at both sexual harassment (SH) and gender harassment (GH), making the distinction between the two\n<ul>\n<li>Montemurro points out that Grauerholz and King did not distinguish between the two, resulting in misleading data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Why no dramas?\n<ul>\n<li>Montemurro interested in how \u201cimages of sexual harassment are trivialized.\u201d Dramas provide much more context, often dealing with the issue far more seriously than comedies (436).<\/li>\n<li>Comedies are \u201cfocused on making the viewer laugh and on the simple restoration of order\u201d (436, citing Marc)\n<ul>\n<li>We talked about the same thing in Shakespeare class \u2013 interesting that the basic formula of the comedy has not changed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Montemurro talks a lot about the effects of the laugh tracks. The shows I\u2019m interested in do not have a laugh track. From what I know about television in general, it seems that laugh tracks were once more popular than they are now. Perhaps this is relevant to my thesis in terms of how television is evolving?\n<ul>\n<li>QUESTION: Additionally, in terms of form, although all three shows are workplace-based, The Office and Parks and Recreation are \u201cmockumentaries.\u201d What impact could this have on the content, if any?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Claims that comedies have \u201cspecific motivations, one of which is to assert superiority\u201d (436, citing Giles, Bourhis, Gadfield, Davies, and Davies).\n<ul>\n<li>Humor used to \u201cmaintain boundaries between men and women in the workplace\u201d (Kanter)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u201cMETHOD\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>\u201cOperational Definitions\u201d<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Definition of sexual harassment, combined from two sources:\n<ul>\n<li>Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC): legal definition of workplace sexual harassment, defining \u201c<em>who <\/em>can and can\u2019t be harassed\u201d\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cHarasser can be of either sex\u201d 438<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHarasser can be a coworker, a supervisor, a client, or other person not employed by the organization\u201d 438<\/li>\n<li>\u201cVictims not only include those who are directly harassed but also those who are adversely affected by sexual harassment\u201d 438<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHarasser\u2019s conduct must be unwelcome\u201d 438<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>United States Merit System Protection Board (USMSPB): measured sexual harassment using following categories:\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cJokes: uninviting sexual teasing, jokes, remarks or questions\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cLooks: uninvited sexually suggestive looks or gestures\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDates: uninvited pressure for dates\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cCalls: uninvited letters, phone calls, or material of a sexual nature\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cTouches: uninvited and deliberate touching, leaning over, cornering or pinching\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFavors: Uninvited pressure for sexual favors\u201d<\/li>\n<li>(Horan and Semora, p. 12)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Montemurro uses these definitions as guidelines for her study.\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cJokes, looks, calls\u201d \u201cclassified as hostile environment\/gender harassment\u201d 438<\/li>\n<li>\u201cTouches, favors, dates\u201d \u201cquid pro quo sexual harassment\u201d 438<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Every incident of harassment \u2013 sexual and gender \u2013 recorded\n<ul>\n<li>Any \u201crelevant verbal, nonverbal, or physical exchange\u201d 438<\/li>\n<li>Incidents not mutually exclusive: one incident could be both a \u201clook\u201d and a \u201cjoke\u201d for example 438<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Incidents also coded by two research assistants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u201cRESULTS AND DISCUSSION\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>\u201cThe Presence and Frequency of Harassment\u201d<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I don\u2019t think it\u2019s necessary to closely analyze her findings here. I am not interested in the shows she discusses. However, it could be helpful to use her methods as a basis for my own study.\n<ul>\n<li>This is the part I\u2019m bad at. Data. I have no idea what her tables really mean. I understand what she\u2019s doing here, but once she turns it into numbers, I\u2019m lost.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Gender Harassment\n<ul>\n<li>She presents the data in paragraph form. Then she gives a few examples.<\/li>\n<li>Finds that \u201cjokes\u201d were most prevalent. Provides explanation for this:\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cHumor has specific motivations and goals in interaction. One of these goals is to establish in-group and out-group boundaries (Francis, 1994; Giles et al., 1976\/1996).
