{"id":394,"date":"2019-11-25T11:39:39","date_gmt":"2019-11-25T16:39:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/ldst390cnr\/?p=394"},"modified":"2019-11-25T11:39:39","modified_gmt":"2019-11-25T16:39:39","slug":"black-panther-movie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/ldst390cnr\/2019\/11\/25\/black-panther-movie\/","title":{"rendered":"Black Panther Movie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carvell Wallace\u2019s discussion of the importance of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Black Panther <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for the African-American community is an important one and helped me understand the movie more after I watched it. I remember going to the theaters to see the movie and not quite understanding why there was so much excitement around it fully. Wallace clears this up and shows the ways <em>Black Panther\u00a0<\/em>empowers its black audience in ways other black films do not.The most important point that Wallace made for me was how there have been other superhero movies with a black superhero lead. The difference with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Black Panther <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was that it was the first superhero movie that depicted not only a black superhero lead, but it depicted black people with \u201ca lot of agency.\u201d The film was \u201cseeped very specifically and purposefully in its blackness.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I think this is an interesting contrast from just talking about a film with a black lead or leads. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Black Panther <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">shows a civilization where black people have thrived and been at the forefront of invention and technology which white people want from them. It\u2019s the kind of story that in the past would have only been written about white people. It doesn\u2019t show the typical black narrative of showing black suffering and redemption.
