Counterargument Against Rooney Rule
Opponents of the Rooney Rule argue the rule is a pandering technique which has elements of tokenism and does not truly remedy the bias in hiring practices.Skeptics of this practice argue that forcing teams to interview marginalized groups, such as women or African Americans, there will be times that a token minority will be interviewed for the sake of fulfilling the requirement without the minority ever being seriously considered for the job, which would be patronizing the candidates as opposed to following the spirit of the rule which is to end biased hiring practices (Reid). What those who argue this position fail to realize is that even though the women who apply for these positions may participate in an interview where they have a very low chance of receiving the position, they are still gaining valuable interview experience and contacts which will serve to aid them secure positions in the future by making them more prepared
