NFL Coaches Summit
Every year, the NFL and the Pro Football Hall of Fame host a “Coaches Summit” aimed at improving coaching techniques for aspiring football coaches. The NFL provides speakers and presenters of all backgrounds such as former coaches, players, and psychologists to give insight into the art of coaching football across all levels of the sport. While this event seemingly provides a great opportunity for all aspiring coaches to enhance their craft, the list of speakers for the 2018 conference is indicative of the problem encountered by women who wish to coach football at the professional level face. Of the ten speakers currently expected to speak, only two are women. The NFL must acknowledge men and women have distinct, yet equally effective styles of leadership, and for the NFL to assume that women should utilize the same styles of coaching and leadership as their male counterparts is both shortsighted and indicative of its cultural issue with hyper-masculinity. Women as coaches have shown to be more democratic and encourage participation more so than their male counterparts (Bosanac). Because of these distinct differences between male and female coaching styles, it would be more practical to expand the number of female speakers who have experience in effective leadership to educate both men and women on different methods of leadership. The NFL should complement the increase in female speakers at this event with authoritative figures on diversity and inclusivity who can help to educate coaches on the importance and benefits of creating a progressive locker room. This training will not only help aspiring female coaches to gain experience from men and women who have expertise in the field of effective leadership in sports, but also help all coaches to better understand the importance and benefits of providing a culture which promotes individuals of diverse backgrounds.
