Historically speaking, some of the initial hazing incidents that occurred were perhaps more brutal than what is known today, primarily due to a lack of restrictions being implemented from higher authorities. The main purpose of initiation rituals is to gain approval from a desired community or society. In general, there are positives and negatives to hazing participation. The positives can include a sense of accomplishment associated with the acceptance from a respected audience. The negatives, on the other hand, can be as drastic as the loss of one’s life. As society evolves and develops, different aspects become greater priority to the social image. Today, that image is aimed towards being accepted by an in-group. Throughout this paper, I will analyze ways in which the historical culture of hazing has evolved but has influenced the current desire to obtain societal acceptance. Ultimately, the humiliating effects of hazing in modern day society continue to remain prominent due to the craving to maintain a sense of community; therefore, exploiting the yearning to receive approval from society, a mindset that stems from the influence of social media platforms.
