{"id":3465,"date":"2020-10-13T09:56:06","date_gmt":"2020-10-13T13:56:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/ldst1010304f2019\/?p=3465"},"modified":"2020-10-13T09:56:06","modified_gmt":"2020-10-13T13:56:06","slug":"yellow-walpaper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/ldst1010304f2019\/2020\/10\/13\/yellow-walpaper\/","title":{"rendered":"Yellow Walpaper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The role that gender plays in this short story is very evident.\u00a0 It seems that the narrator has been put into some kind of mental institution and struggles to find her identity, while explaining how much she hates her room.\u00a0 It seems that after having her child the narrator was admitted to an institution of some kind because of depression.\u00a0 While, John her husband says that she is fine, and that she will be back to normal soon, the narrator obviously is not okay.\u00a0 The idea that a woman is dependent on a man is evident, \u201cJohn is a physician, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">perhaps<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014(I would not say it to a living soul, of course, but this is dead paper and a great relief to my mind)\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">perhaps<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that is one reason I do not get well faster.\u00a0 You see, he does not believe I am sick!\u201d\u00a0 The idea of male superiority shows in John\u2019s actions, because instead of listening to the narrator\u2019s problems, he doesn\u2019t believe her.\u00a0 Meanwhile, the narrator has given up trying to convince people otherwise, \u201cAnd what can one do?\u00a0 If a physician of high standing, and one\u2019s own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression\u2014a slight hysterical tendency\u2014what is one to do?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Towards the end of the story though the narrator begins to become more defiant of these gender stereotypes.\u00a0 She doesn\u2019t always listen to what John says becoming more and more defiant as the story continues.\u00a0 Until the very end of the story when she finally breaks out of her shell.\u00a0 She was able to pull off all of the wallpaper that made her so unhappy.\u00a0 While admiring the wall she writes, \u201cI quite enjoy the room, now it is bare again.\u201d\u00a0 This signifies how she has broken out of the shell that she was in, and is now able to defy John and become her own person.\u00a0 This continues until she locks everyone out of the room and is by herself contemplating how to escape.\u00a0 Finally, she says, \u201cI\u2019ve got out at last,\u201d said I, \u201cin spite of you and Jane!
