{"id":8907,"date":"2020-11-27T05:00:18","date_gmt":"2020-11-27T10:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jolt.richmond.edu\/?p=8907"},"modified":"2020-11-23T07:14:38","modified_gmt":"2020-11-23T12:14:38","slug":"e-cigarettes-new-technology-but-old-advertising-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/jolt\/2020\/11\/27\/e-cigarettes-new-technology-but-old-advertising-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"E-cigarettes: New Technology, but Old Advertising Strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Megan Haugh<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From the ashes of Big Tobacco, the &#8220;millennial Marlboro man&#8221;\u2014Juul\u2014is born.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>\u00a0 Compared to the height of the Big Tobacco industry, today&#8217;s advertisements by traditional cigarette manufacturers are nearly nonexistent.\u00a0 Joe Camel may have died in 1997<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a>, but his legacy (and the legacy of Escort, Lucky Strike, Marlboro, Salem, and others) lives on.\u00a0 The central themes of Big Tobacco&#8217;s advertising\u2014&#8221;faux medical imagery and exaggerated health claims, posh cultural icons and celebrity endorsements, and the explicit targeting of youth populations&#8221;\u2014have reemerged in advertising for e-cigarettes.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a>\u00a0 With increasing health concerns over e-cigarettes, should Juul and other e-cigarette manufacturers be subject to the same advertising restrictions that Big Tobacco faces?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Robert Jackler (an ear, nose, and throat surgeon from Stanford University) is well-versed in these advertising themes.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a>\u00a0 Dr. Jackler, who researches advertisements for both traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes, has collected thousands advertisements.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a>\u00a0 Based on his review, Dr. Jackler concluded that e-cigarette advertising parallels traditional cigarette advertising.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a>\u00a0 Like Big Tobacco promoting the health benefits of cigarettes, Juul and other e-cigarette manufacturers have promoted vaping as a healthier alternative to smoking.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a>\u00a0 In the past, Big Tobacco once advertised low-tar cigarettes and light cigarettes as a healthy alternative.\u00a0 In fact, Lucky Strike once advertised &#8220;20,679 Physicians say &#8216;Luckies are less irritating&#8217; . . . Your throat protection against irritation against cough.&#8221;<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a> \u00a0Similarly, e-cigarette manufacturers have claimed that e-cigarette&#8217;s are either healthier than traditional cigarettes or, more simply, are healthy.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a>\u00a0 By comparison, e-cigarette manufacturers have claimed that e-cigarette&#8217;s are either healthier than traditional cigarettes or, more simply, are healthy.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\">[10]<\/a>\u00a0 Although Juul denies this, the company&#8217;s advertisements used language like &#8220;switch&#8221; and &#8220;alternative&#8221; which imply a health a benefit.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\">[11]<\/a>\u00a0 However, like traditional cigarettes, there have been reported health problems associated with e-cigarettes.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\">[12]<\/a>\u00a0 In 2019, the Center for Disease Control reported 380 cases of respiratory illness and six deaths related to e-cigarettes.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\">[13]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The targeting of youth populations is another parallel between traditional cigarette advertising and e-cigarette advertising.\u00a0 Big Tobacco used flavored cigarettes (such as cotton-candy or chocolate) to entice children into smoking.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\">[14]<\/a>\u00a0 Because Big Tobacco&#8217;s strategy was so effective, the FDA banned &#8220;kid-friendly&#8221; flavors of cigarettes.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn15\" name=\"_ftnref15\">[15]<\/a>\u00a0 Like traditional cigarettes, there are flavored e-cigarettes.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn16\" name=\"_ftnref16\">[16]<\/a>\u00a0 The similarities don&#8217;t end there though.\u00a0 Dr. Jackler also noted that Juul and other e-cigarette manufacturers have used &#8220;bright colors, sleek design and fashionable millennial models&#8221; to target children.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn17\" name=\"_ftnref17\">[17]<\/a>\u00a0 Even traditional cigarette manufactures cannot ignore the parallels.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn18\" name=\"_ftnref18\">[18]<\/a>\u00a0 Phillip-Morris, the manufacturer of Marlboro cigarettes, actually sued Juul because their advertising was too similar.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn19\" name=\"_ftnref19\">[19]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Right now, there are several pending lawsuits filed against Juul and other e-cigarette manufacturers.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/AFE009E7-C403-4174-A3D4-38A30BCEB147#_ftn20\" name=\"_ftnref20\">[20]<\/a>\u00a0 These lawsuits allege that Juul and other e-cigarette manufacturers are doing exactly what Big Tobacco did\u2014they have been deceptively advertising to children.\u00a0 Today&#8217;s &#8220;millennial Marlboro man&#8221;
