Any “Quest”ions? : A comparison of the Pre, Old, and New Quests

The scholars of the No Quest period were critical of the Old Quest scholars because of the Old Quest scholar’s strong optimism about their ability to fully construct a historical Jesus and replace the old theological Jesus with their new historical Jesus. The No Quest scholars did believe that it was possible to know some details about the historical Jesus, but that the historical Jesus was irrelevant to the Christian faith. This is opposed to the views of the Pre Quest scholars, who believed that the historical Jesus and the theological Jesus were the same figure. In the No Quest, the historical Jesus and the theological Jesus are completely separate entities, the historical one just isn’t important to faith.
