9.22 Reimarus and Paulus

Pre-Quest: Before enlightenment, accepting much of what is believed about Jesus

Old Quest: Challenging logic, historical vs. theological Jesus

Reimarus was the first person to form a historical perception of Jesus’ life. He believed that the apostles had ulterior motives and that they moved Jesus’ body to stage his resurrection.

Paulus (1828) justified miracles as a misunderstanding. He saved the Gospel’s stories but needed to provide an explanation for what happened without claiming they were miracles.
