Solving Problems/ Improving Leadership

There were several examples of problem solving and issues that I saw solutions for during the course of my internship. Touching first on teamwork and collaboration, the most evident teamwork was between myself and another intern. Being that we were both responsible for completing the audit project and there were a large number of firms, it made sense for us to split them in half and work together. While this small team functioned well I believe it could’ve worked better if we were clear on the entire project and all necessary assignments from the beginning, this way we could have split up the entire project and being working independently, helping each other when needed, on each thing. This would’ve positively impacted the work project by allowing us to see the end goal and having a better understanding of how to go about working together. Despite this, I think we worked very well, being flexible with each other’s schedules and using our knowledge to answer Excel questions.

Looking to how I would identify these issues and share solutions I believe my time and position at my internship was not enough to identify these issues within leadership. My internship provided me with a great sneak-peek into the company, but because I was not very involved and was only required to check in when necessary, I do not feel as if I have a good gauge of what a typical internship program would be like if it was not remote. I do not believe this organization has hosted a remote internship before so, this may have been their first summer. With that said, if I was in a position to truly evaluate the issues within teamwork and leadership I would go about it through observing day-to-day habits, what individuals do to nurse that it is not situation-based, or a one-off action, not following the contingency leadership theories. After observing I think the next action would be to sit down with my direct supervisor to let them know what I have observed and my tips on how to improve teamwork whether this would be more frequent meetings, more communication, or just a basic layout of the intern summer projects prior to delving into the summer.
