GRID Theory & VVAN

Virginia Victim Assistance Network and their multiple employees exemplify the GRID Theory due to their various positions and leadership styles. I believe that VVAN as an organization epitomizes the 9,9 aspect of the GRID Theory. They are extremely focused on their relationships within and outside of their organization while also being diligent on completing tasks. For example, for our Victim Assist Helpline, we talk to victims of crime while also making sure that we complete the steps to help them. Throughout the call, VVAN employees are focused on building a relationship of trust and support with the victim, ensuring that they feel safe and important. While doing this, VVAN helpline coordinators are also finding specific resources to give to the victim to fit their needs. Within our organization, VVAN employees have a top priority of supporting one another. It is vital for all employees to be heard and valued. While doing this, employees are also making sure tasks are being completed, even if that includes helping one another finish these tasks in the most efficient, effective, and beneficial way possible. In addition, I believe that my site supervisor floats between the 1,9 and 9,9 style of leadership. Kate has always been someone that is constantly concerned about your feelings. She wants to ensure that you feel supported so that you can succeed both inside and outside the organization. As Victim Assist Helpline Coordinator, it was her job to be solely concerned with relationships and the feelings and emotions of victims. However, as she has transitioned to be both Victim Assist Helpline Coordinator and Executive Director, she has had to be more concerned with tasks being completed than ever before. She is now in charge of creating budgets, talking to victims of crime, and ensuring that all employees have a plan and know what to do. She is in fact the face of VVAN, so I believe that she is more closely aligned with the 9,9 leadership style. Other employees such as our Homicide Support Group Coordinator exemplifies the 9,1 leadership style. Her entire job is supporting those who have been affected by homicide, so she must develop secure relationships with everyone she comes into contact with. Overall, VVAN is mainly focused on relationships and ensuring everyone feels safe, supported, and valued.
