Weeks 3 & 4- Organizational Culture

At PSEG safety is the number one priority for all employees, whether it be corporate, engineers at the nuclear plant, or meter readers. It is always expected for all employees to complete their work in the safest way possible, and for the State and Government Affairs department that means dealing with highly sensitive information. As new legislation is being written or innovations within the company need to pass regulations, it is very important to ensure that the confidential information stays private otherwise, it could negatively impact the corporation. Cybersecurity is something that PSEG and all utility companies have been paying more attention to, especially after the Colonial Pipeline hacking earlier this summer.  Safety has taken on a new meaning for PSEG as the company makes the transition from a fully virtual to a hybrid model. As the company is making the transition communication has been especially critical to make sure that everything runs smoothly. It is very difficult to have half of a team in person working together, with the other half at home on Zoom, not getting the same experience. For my internship with PSEG, we use Skype for Business and Outlook as our prime methods of communication. Skype for Business allows anyone in your address book to see who is online, if they are in a meeting, or if they have been inactive for a long time; as well as being able to quickly direct or group message people as needed.

Primarily if a meeting needs to be quickly set up between my small team (two other interns and the boss) someone will create a meeting on the Outlook calendar and then Skype message the team alerting us to the change in the calendar. It is extremely critical for the State and Government Affairs Department to always be able to be in quick communication with everyone, especially when watching a hearing of the Board of Public Utilities of an important decision regarding the business. Communication is also so key for every department within the company because over 3 million people in New Jersey and Long Island, NY rely on PSEG for electricity and natural gas to power their daily lives. There is much more emphasis on the importance of communication, especially during hurricane season, to ensure that the people are receiving the best, safest, cleanest, and most reliable energy, which greatly impacts how the company chooses to function. Overall, I feel that the organization of the company lends itself to the type of work being done and the overall goals of the company.
