{"id":1116,"date":"2018-07-03T16:09:53","date_gmt":"2018-07-03T20:09:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/jepsoninternship\/?p=1116"},"modified":"2018-07-03T16:09:53","modified_gmt":"2018-07-03T20:09:53","slug":"sli-an-organization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/jepsoninternship\/2018\/07\/03\/sli-an-organization\/","title":{"rendered":"SLI an organization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SLI exists in an odd place as an organization.\u00a0 It is mostly student run with great overhead given by faculty, it is both extremely organized and completely chaotic.\u00a0 Dr. Kaufman runs the organization, and exhibits what I would call quintessential transformational leadership.\u00a0 The organization answers to a higher call and works toward a noble goal that is only further elevated by the care and passion shown within our leader.\u00a0 He creates doctrine and policy that outlines the mission of the group and allows others to find their own way within those guidelines.\u00a0\u00a0Transformational leadership is defined as a leadership approach that causes change in individuals and social systems.\u00a0 I believe that Dr. Kaufman does that, he incites his volunteers and students to cause change and change itself in the social system.\u00a0 Ironically, he tries to steer clear from that label.\u00a0 He says that he is done causing change in the system, changing ideas; he is setting out to help only a few individuals, to cause direct action.\u00a0 Still, he causes change and loyalty among his followers.\u00a0 My first impressions of him is that he appears extroverted, open, conscientious, he is agreeable to most but unwilling to compromise to those he disagrees with, and he appears to have a healthy amount of neuroticism.\u00a0 I am lucky to be able to work closely with him.\u00a0 he is willing to engage with everyone on a personal level.\u00a0 He is extremely passionate about the things he discusses and extremely knowledgable.\u00a0 He is constantly thinking about issues and how it will effect students, he is constantly keeping up to date with current events.\u00a0 He is also extremely open to new ideas and suggestions such as websites and social media as a means of improving the organization.<\/p>\n<p>SLI is an organization that could easily fall apart and be blown away in the wind if it weren&#8217;t for a strong central leader.\u00a0 It exists to help Latino&#8217;s gain access to higher education.\u00a0 It is constantly threatened by a lack of money, a lack of support, and a lack of awareness.\u00a0 It relies heavily on volunteers and seasonal interns who help organize tutoring hours.\u00a0 The other interns are all lovely, hardworking, and passionate, they support and help each other.\u00a0 However, communication and organization itself is fundamentally flawed by a lack of centralized emails, texts, and documents.\u00a0 As well as the fact that many of the volunteers, interns, and students are temporary so anything built so far has not lasted.\u00a0 I hope to be able help Dr. Kaufman as well as the organization cement themselves as a permanent fixture and resource for Latinos in Richmond.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SLI exists in an odd place as an organization.\u00a0 It is mostly student run with great overhead given by faculty,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4011,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"colormag_page_layout":"default_layout","footnotes":""},"categories":[76607,76611],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1116","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-organizational-culture","category-theories-in-action"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/jepsoninternship\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1116","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/jepsoninternship\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/jepsoninternship\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/jepsoninternship\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/4011"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/jepsoninternship\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1116"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/jepsoninternship\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1116\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/jepsoninternship\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1116"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/jepsoninternship\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1116"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/jepsoninternship\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1116"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
