{"id":2804,"date":"2013-03-31T16:41:21","date_gmt":"2013-03-31T20:41:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/james\/?p=2804"},"modified":"2013-03-31T16:41:21","modified_gmt":"2013-03-31T20:41:21","slug":"volunteering-at-the-farmers-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/james\/2013\/03\/31\/volunteering-at-the-farmers-market\/","title":{"rendered":"Volunteering at the Farmer&#8217;s Market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday, I volunteered to table for the Sierra Club at a farmer\u2019s market off of Forest Avenue.\u00a0 Having never been to a farmer\u2019s market, I didn\u2019t really know what to expect.\u00a0 As soon as we arrived, I knew I was going to enjoy the atmosphere of the place.\u00a0 Artsy people with tattoos and dread locks joined suburban mothers with young children to shop around the famer\u2019s market.\u00a0 Every booth had something interesting to look at, taste, or smell.\u00a0 We set up our table for the Sierra Club in order to make people aware of the construction of a natural gas power plant in Virginia and hopefully to get them to sign a petition to prevent board members from approving that decision. \u00a0The goal of this protest is to encourage the use of wind and solar power rather than using more fossil fuels to provide us with energy.<\/p>\n<p>Since there were four of us at the table, we would take turns going in pairs to explore the market.\u00a0 The doughnuts, Chinese food, sticky buns, soup, bread, cheese, and lemonade that we sampled all tasted even more delicious because they were all homemade.\u00a0 We briefly listened to the local folk band that was playing in the background and browsed at a handmade jewelry stand.\u00a0 Baby goats, an ewe, two greyhounds, and a bulldog were just a few of the animals that were present at the farmer\u2019s market as well, and they made the experience quite entertaining as well.\u00a0 When we were tabling, some interesting people stopped by our table to understand what we were advertising.\u00a0 An elderly man disagreed with some of the information we were presenting and tried to explain his thoughts on the matter, while another man worked for a powerplant and was not impressed with our efforts.\u00a0 Some people were very interested and supported the cause, signing the petition without even reading it.\u00a0 Others decided against signing anything until they researched more about it.\u00a0 We decided that it was a good thing that people wanted to wait to understand exactly what they were signing before they supported it. \u00a0The farmer\u2019s market was a great place to have the Sierra Club\u2019s table set up because people were very receptive and open to hearing new perspectives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday, I volunteered to table for the Sierra Club at a farmer\u2019s market off of Forest Avenue.\u00a0 Having never been to a farmer\u2019s market, I didn\u2019t really know what to expect.\u00a0 As soon as we arrived, I knew I &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/james\/2013\/03\/31\/volunteering-at-the-farmers-market\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1869,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6247],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2804","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cbl"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/james\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2804","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/james\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/james\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/james\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1869"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/james\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2804"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/james\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2804\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/james\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2804"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/james\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2804"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/james\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2804"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
