{"id":168,"date":"2019-03-30T14:35:56","date_gmt":"2019-03-30T18:35:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/itoddjob\/?p=168"},"modified":"2019-04-08T11:23:18","modified_gmt":"2019-04-08T15:23:18","slug":"using-and-tweaking-macos-mojave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/itoddjob\/2019\/03\/30\/using-and-tweaking-macos-mojave\/","title":{"rendered":"Using and Tweaking MacOS Mojave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I haven&#8217;t found much worthwhile for Mojave yet, and some of what I&#8217;ve found is annoying (see Security Annoyances section below).\u00a0 This post contains several of the things that I&#8217;ve found while acclimatizing to Mojave.<\/p>\n<h3>Dark Mode and Night Owl<\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s amazing how many people remark how great Dark Mode is.\u00a0 I like it, myself, but I see it as the main change with Mojave and not worth a new OS installation.\u00a0 Anyhow, I like Dark Mode (a feature upon which the screen mostly goes dark and important things like test are white, i.e., mainly the colors are inverted from the traditional scheme), but I don&#8217;t want to use Dark Mode all the time.\u00a0 I found a free utility that allows one to manually change back and forth between the modes easily or set an automatic schedule (awesome).\u00a0 Night Owl is available at\u00a0https:\/\/nightowl.kramser.xyz\/ .<\/p>\n<h3>Spectacle and Window Sizing<\/h3>\n<p>While getting used to Mojave, I found a replacement for all the apps like Better Snap ZTool, Better Text Tool, and Window Tidy that I normally use to be able to resize app windows to half or quarter size. Spectacle is a free app that does the same thing so I am using that now.\u00a0 It is available at\u00a0https:\/\/www.spectacleapp.com\/ .\u00a0 And it&#8217;s absolutely worth spending the time to learn the hotkey shortcuts!<\/p>\n<p>Recent Apps Showing up on Dock<\/p>\n<p>Just like natural scrolling came a few years ago, Apple added a feature to\u00a0keep recent applications listed on the\u00a0dock and made it the default for Mojave.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t like that, you can turn it off by going to the Dock tab on System Preferences and deselecting the option called &#8220;Show recent applications in Dock.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/itoddjob\/files\/2019\/03\/by-default-2019-04-08-at-11.09.33-AM-copy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-173\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/itoddjob\/files\/2019\/03\/by-default-2019-04-08-at-11.09.33-AM-copy.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1338\" height=\"792\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Onyx for System Maintenance<\/h3>\n<p>I run my\u00a0Mac a lot harder than most so I find it useful to run a maintenance app like Onyx from time to time.\u00a0 Luckily, Titanium Software has wonderfully updated their Onyx app to support Mojave.\u00a0 I only recommend this app to power users, and the app is available at\u00a0https:\/\/www.titanium-software.fr\/en\/onyx.html .<\/p>\n<h3>Security Annoyances<\/h3>\n<p>In earlier versions, you would get several requests to confirm app requests on a security level, but now, even if I approve a particular app with access to another app, I still get the warnings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I haven&#8217;t found much worthwhile for Mojave yet, and some of what I&#8217;ve found is annoying (see Security Annoyances section below).\u00a0 This post contains several of the things that I&#8217;ve found while acclimatizing to Mojave.
