North Carolina was the next-to-last state to ratify the 13<sup>th<\/sup> amendment on December 4 1865 with a vote 100-4 House vote at the state Capitol. Only two days later, on December 6<sup>th<\/sup>, Georgia followed. The Thirteen Amendment was officially ratified on December 6<sup>th<\/sup>, making slavery unconstitutional in the United States. On April 8, 1864 it passed the senate and the House on January 31, 1865.<\/p>\n<p>December 4, 1865 was a day that marked the history of the state, followed by many positive rapid changes the ratification of the 13<sup>th<\/sup> Amendment brought. Only 3 years after the ratification of the amendment, 16 African-Americans were elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives, and three were elected to the state Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Today, a commemoration ceremony was help in the NC State House chamber at the Capitol, where the ratification of the 13<sup>th<\/sup> amendment in NC was signed in 1865. The State Archives even put North Carolina\u2019s copy of the amendment on display for a few hours. This was without a doubt a special occasion for the residents of the state since this document is rarely shown to the public due to its sensitivity to light due to how old the document is.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Judge James A.
