Freedom of the Press
The book defines democracy as “a system of rule by the people, defines by the existence of popular sovereignty, political equality, and political liberty.” Since the U.S. is a democracy its citizens have the right to vote and elect representatives. Every citizen has equal say and basic rights. We live in a world of checks and balances. Americans are entitled to their own opinions and can publish those thoughts to the world. Freedom of the press is protected by the First Amendments in the United States Constitution. Newspapers have always been the media outlet to share stories and news about what is going on in America and around the world. However, these days with technology having a huge presence in America, is the press going too far?
President Donald Trump has expressed his anger toward the press which has been unlike other presidents in the past. President Trump thinks the liberals are trying to bring him down. But how much accountability does the press have? The media is known for being inaccurate in most stories or having lack of truth. President Trump said ABC News was “horrendously inaccurate and dishonest” while CNN was “the least trusted name in news” and said that a Washington Post reporter “should be fired.” These three media outlets are believed to be more skewed toward left-wing ideals. Some viewers have referred to CNN as the “Clinton News Network.” President Trump has been very public about his hatred for the media while other presidents remained less vocal because it was under the constitution for freedom of the press.
With so much coverage in news today because of technology, has the press gone too far? It has become increasing easier to capture and video or photo during new worthy events. President Trump believes that biasness in new media has gotten out of control. Information that is not true is being purposely published to readers without any kind of validation. The New York Times reported “The effect of the news media criticism remains debated. A Politico/Morning Consult poll found that 46 percent of Americans believe the news media makes up stories about the president. The partisan divide, however, has become pronounced. Among Democrats, nearly 75 percent expressed confidence in the news media compared with only 19 percent of Republicans.”
President Trump said “It’s frankly disgusting the way the press is able to write whatever they want to write.”
The new movie “The Post” produced by Steven Spielberg tells the story of the Washington Post journalists and their efforts to publish the Pentagon Papers. Many believe that Spielberg produced this movie because he wanted to draw a parallel between what happened then with media versus now. In the end the journalist published the papers.
“The decision to publish the Papers becomes nothing less than an assertion of democracy, made all the more potent when newspapers across the land publish in solidarity. The press — the media — becomes greater than the sum of its parts. But that’s because it always was. The Pentagon Papers marked an iconic moment in American history: the press claiming its own freedom to call out the excesses of power. ‘The Post’ celebrates what that means, tapping into an enlightened nostalgia for the glory days of newspapers, but the film also takes you back to a time when the outcome was precarious, and the freedoms we thought we took for granted hung in the balance. Just as they do today.”
President Trump hasn’t made any actions but has threatened to revoke the broadcasting license for NBC. Can President Trump do this or it is their right? Has news media become more out of control? Is it still Freedom of press or should more limits be places on news media outlets?
