Dr. Keys, a very active man, lived a very long and interesting life. He worked in a variety of fields, including public health, which is what I am interested in. Dr. Keys is the person most responsible for the idea that a high-fat diet leads to high-cholesterol and heart disease, and then later went on to recommend the Mediterranean diet.
As Neil Armstrong put it, “I believe that the Good Lord gave us a finite number of heartbeats and I’m damned if I’m going to use mine running up and down the street.” I can definitely relate to his statement at times! As a person who is not entirely fond of going out on long runs, I was reassured that their findings suggested that jogging is not as beneficial to longevity as previously believed. Next time my team is running at practice, I will be tempted to tell my coach to read this section of the book, however, I am sure that would not go over well.
To summarize this chapter, physical activity is key factor in living a long and healthy life, however, it doesn’t require one to participate in intense 30 minute exercise everyday, in which he or she does not enjoy. There are many forms of exercising, other than running marathons and completing iron mans.
I am also a person who do not enjoy long runnings very much… Everytime I run it just feels miserable :^(. But I do enjoy other exercising, like hiking or biking. I feel like nowadays everyone is running in the gym with their earphones on. And with this trend I alway feel that I am impulsed to run, and run on a machine for a prolonged period. But…I don’t know if it is just me, I like to do things that I am not necessarily enjoy doing… Because I feel a sense of accomplishment and control after I force myself to run, I would still run next time even I hate it so much…
