The Effects of Parental Divorce

I thought it was interesting that they examined if the child was the cause of the divorce. Though they found no relation between childhood personality and parents’ divorce, my usual line of thought was that if children were born into a failed marriage, they are seen as ways to patch a failed marriage together, and I almost forgot that the child could have an affect on a marriage. Children are another human being, after all.

I liked how to book covered children that were affected by divorce negatively and positively in future marriages of their own. I’m also glad that they addressed that families who stay together for the sake of their children is not recommended.

It was intriguing how they found that subjects who found personal satisfaction and accomplishment in midlife buffered against the ill effects of their childhood traumas for only those whose parents had divorced. Though personal satisfaction did not affect mortality riskĀ  for those whose parents stayed together, this finding makes me happy to see that there is some hope for people who face not just traumas from divorce, but also from any other early traumatic event as well.

One Response to The Effects of Parental Divorce

I thought that it was also interesting that the researchers determined whether the child was the reason the divorce occurred. Usually it is the other way around where parents reassure the child that they are not the reason the divorce is occurred in any way. I thought that this was an interesting perspective to take on their research. However unlikely that a child may have caused the divorce, it still needed to be ruled out as a potential confounding factor.
I agree with you that it is inspiring to see that there is hope for people who face trauma and are able to grow more resilient and stronger from their experiences. Though life may be difficult at times, these individuals fought back and made sure the same events they were impacted by did not impact them forever.
