While reading chapter two, I was pleasantly surprised to recognize that I possessed the characteristics of those who live longer. I’ve always acknowledged myself as an organized and prudent person, but I never believed that these were traits that could predict longer, healthier lives. The reason for this was probably because like many others, I thought that lifespan could only be predicted through things like exercise, and eating well. Although I knew that social well-being was also important, since we hear and read so much about the importance of physical well-being and disease, I didn’t realize the extent of it.
After reading this chapter though, I can understand why. Conscientious people are less likely to engage in risky behaviors, and are more likely to do things that protect their health. They think about their actions before they do it, and surround themselves with like minded individuals, thus engaging in healthier and stronger, fulfilling relationships. I took the test and scored 39 which equals to a high level of conscientiousness.
