When I began to read Shari Motro’s article “Lessons from the Swiss Cheese Map”, I had printed her article in black and white… I always print short articles so that I can highlight and write comments. I realized that this system would not work for this article by the fourth paragraph. Because everything was in black and white, I could not understand the maps (they weren’t made for black and white print!), but once I looked at the color images I must say that were just as bad as the black and white, it not worse! I can’t say I have ever been so stunned by a story about mapping, but Motro’s article takes the cake. I am very happy to see that there are efforts to improve the maps of the region, but this example goes to show the importance of mapping as a means of communication and compromise.
