This is a story map that shows Korean population of 2010 in Washington D.C., and Northern Virginia. I used “census track” for data because it is more detailed so that shows the different population clearly. There are eight layers of data on a legend and the darker (gray color) the colors are, the higher the number of Koreans is. You can also see the numbers of Japanese, Chinese, and total Asian population if you click on the city. Centerville, Mantua, and Annandale indicate the highest numbers of Korean population. Because there are numerous Koreans living in those cities, there are many places that are related to Koreans. I chose nine representative places including Korean food markets and Korean restaurants, and displayed them on the story map with descriptions. The audience of the map can be politicians in America who are planning to make a policy related to Korea, Korean Americans, people who want to explore Korean culture, and people who want to open a new business like Korean restaurants, Korean food markets, and a Karaoke. The high Korean population rate in Virginia once influenced politicians to declare Liancourt Rocks (Dokdo) as a Korean territory. It is a political issue since Japanese government is claiming their rights on this island for decades although it has been Korean territory. Because there were lots of Koreans living in Virginia, the state of Virginia officially supported Korean government.
