The most pervasive environmental impacts of a mega dam occur during the decades the mega dam is in use.\u00a0 These impacts do not just remain on-site<\/a>, rather, the river is impacted upstream<\/a> and downstream<\/a>, and waterways are affected on a global scale<\/a>.\u00a0 In addition, active dams have the potential to fail<\/a>, which has dire consequences on the surrounding environment.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

The Aswan High Dam<\/a> of Aswan, Egypt illustrates many of the issues caused by an active dam.<\/p>\n
