{"id":5,"date":"2010-02-10T11:16:34","date_gmt":"2010-02-10T16:16:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/geog320wigs\/introduction\/"},"modified":"2010-02-24T14:42:13","modified_gmt":"2010-02-24T19:42:13","slug":"introduction","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/geog320wigs\/","title":{"rendered":"Introduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Gaza Strip region is frequently in the news concerning the conflict between Israel and Palestine.\u00a0 Most recently,\u00a0 a lot of media attention was given to the December, 2008 bombardment and ground offensive of the Gaza Strip by the Israeli Defense Force.\u00a0 This generated numerous discussions in regards to human rights violations, ethnic conflict and territorial disputes.\u00a0 Nevertheless, the breadth of the issue is such that a lot of vital issues remain hidden from the public spotlight.\u00a0 Examples of such issues are the political and environmental deterrents which prevent people in the Gaza Strip from acquiring clean water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As of 2010, the underground water supplies in the Gaza Strip are sinking.\u00a0 In addition, there are also numerous concerns about the water&#8217;s contamination and toxic levels.\u00a0 This blog will assess the\u00a0sub-national and supra-national perspectives of\u00a0water issues in the Gaza Strip following the escalation of\u00a0violence\u00a0within the region.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Below is a video from UNICEF, concerning\u00a0 the water crisis in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p><title><\/title> \t<!-- \t\t@page { margin: 0.79in } \t\tP { margin-bottom: 0.08in } \t\tA:link { so-language: zxx } \t--><br \/>\n<code><font face=\"Times New Roman, serif\">[kml_flashembed movie=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/FszQtfyy-jU\" width=\"425\" height=\"350\" wmode=\"transparent\" \/]<\/font><\/code><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman, serif\">________________________________________________________<\/font><\/p>\n<p><title><\/title> \t<!-- \t\t@page { margin: 0.79in } \t\tP { margin-bottom: 0.08in } \t\tA:link { so-language: zxx } \t--><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/geog320wigs\/background\/\">Background<\/a> section of this blog will address the historical and political issues surrounding the area which, among other things, continue to effect its environment. Historically, the problem of territoriality has created numerous obstacles, which have made it difficult for institutions to approach environmental issues in the region.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/geog320wigs\/findings\/\">Theory<\/a> section will provide a framework on how water issues in Gaza Strip are being addressed in conjunction with the political, cultural, and regional efforts in the area. This will provide the foundation for the &#8220;Major Actors&#8221; and &quot;Implementation&quot; sections of the blog.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/geog320wigs\/research\/\">Major Actors<\/a> section will provide names of actors and organizations directly involved in Gaza&#39;s water issues.\u00a0 The effectiveness of current regional efforts will be assessed and analyzed.\u00a0 The institutional analysis is based on the 2008- 2009 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unep.org\/PDF\/dmb\/UNEP_Gaza_EA.pdf\">United Nations Environment Programme Environmental Assessment of the Gaza Strip<\/a>.\u00a0 Additional attention will be given to the <a href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=ar&amp;u=http:\/\/www.environment.gov.ps\/&amp;ei=L1WAS5zFNoSUlAftrdmmBw&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=translate&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=3&amp;ved=0CBAQ7gEwAg&amp;prev=\/search%3Fq%3Denvironmental%2Bquality%2Bauthority%26hl%3Den\">Environmental Quality Authority (EQA)<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwa.ps\/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabID=1&amp;lang=en\">Palestinian Water Authority (PWA)<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmwu.ps\/english\/index.php\">Coastal Municipalities Water Utility (CMWU)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/geog320wigs\/conclusion\/\">Implementation<\/a>,\u00a0 we will go over price estimations and current institutional efforts following the recent escalation.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/geog320wigs\/conclusion-2\/\">Conclusion<\/a>, the multifaceted aspects of water issues in the Gaza Strip will be summarized , while taking into account the current institutional efforts to find a solution.
