The aforementioned Cambodian-Vietnamese War led to a Vietnamese occupation of Cambodia, and the Vietnamese withdrawal raised a number of questions regarding the boundaries between those countries – Cambodia continues to claim that Vietnam used that war, fought against the Pol Pot regime, was simply an excuse for a naked land grab. Japan continues to dispute South Korean ownership of the Liancourt Rocks, a small archipelago in the Sea of Japan which sit in rich fishing grounds and which currently serve as a base for the South Korean Coast Guard. Perhaps the most pointless of these is the dispute between China and South Korea over Socotra Rock – a completely submerged rock located 15 feet below sea level in the East China Sea which has never been ABOVE sea level, has never been inhabited, and only serves as the base of a scientific research station.
