Wars

One of the major contributors to the group, Japan, has occupied every other member state during World War II. Its wartime atrocities, which it has never fully apologized or atoned for, continue to inspire terrible bitterness; these sentiments are especially widespread in South Korea and China, which is problematic in light of the fact that these two are among the most significant contributors to the problem of acid rain through their industrial development. Vietnam and Cambodia have been rivals for generations, which recently culminated in the Cambodian-Vietnamese War of1975-1989, during which Cambodia came under Vietnamese occupation. In response to this occupation, China, a Cambodian ally, went to war with Vietnam for the span of one month in 1979; the primary result of this was to reinforce Vietnamese fears of Chinese expansionism which have existed since China occupied Vietnam in 111 BC.
