The Chesapeake Bay and its watershed region is inhabited by over 350 fish species, sixteen species of underwater bay grasses, and thousands of aquatic and terrestrial fauna.

Fish:

There are two types of fish: those who live in the Bay year round and those that migrate to feed or lay eggs. Fish that live in the Bay year round tend to live in nontidal areas and off in the tributaries. Migratory fish can be marine fish (live and lay eggs throughout the bay), anadromous fish (migrate from salt water to fresh water to lay eggs) or catadromous fish (migrate from fresh water to salt water to lay eggs)

Aquatic Fauna:

clams, oysters, mussells, scallops, snails, squid, horsecrabs, shrimp, barnacles, bacteria, phytoplankton, zooplankton

Terrestrial Fauna:

ducks, geese, swans, bald eagles, raptors, sandpipers, herons, barn swallows, gulls, robins and cardinals, deer, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, foxes, beavers, turtles, snakes, lizards, frogs, toads, newts, salamanders and even dolphins!
