{"id":1838,"date":"2016-10-07T11:33:59","date_gmt":"2016-10-07T15:33:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/geog250\/?p=1838"},"modified":"2018-10-19T15:13:16","modified_gmt":"2018-10-19T19:13:16","slug":"hurricane-matthew-hits-florida-2016-10-06","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/geog250\/2016\/10\/07\/hurricane-matthew-hits-florida-2016-10-06\/","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Matthew Hits the South-eastern Seaboard of the United States 2016.10.06"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever looked for a free online tool aimed at improving awareness about meteorological events in our atmosphere? \u00a0Look no further than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ventusky.com\/\">Ventusky.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/geog250\/files\/2016\/10\/Untitled.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1843\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/geog250\/files\/2016\/10\/Untitled-300x156.png\" alt=\"Untitled\" width=\"549\" height=\"291\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After devastating several Caribbean countries like Haiti, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hurricane_Matthew\">Hurricane Matthew<\/a> (pictured above 2016.10.07) followed its predicted path along the coast of the south-eastern seaboard of the United States. \u00a0Hurricane Matthew was\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/aboutsshws.php\">category 4 hurricane<\/a>, meaning just the wind alone\u00a0has the potential to rip trees out of the ground and even level entire buildings. \u00a0The worst part of Hurricane Matthew was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/surge\/\">storm surge<\/a>\u00a0which is caused by high winds pushing water inland. \u00a0Widespread <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/surge\/inundation\/\">flooding<\/a> along the coast of the eastern seaboard is the result of storm surge. \u00a0The danger during a category 4 hurricane is real, which is why several National Parks, including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/ever\/index.htm\">Everglades National Park<\/a> closed for the duration of the storm.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ventusky.com\/\">Ventusky.com<\/a>, anyone can view a multitude of different atmospheric or hydrospheric\u00a0measurements\u00a0of any desired location on Earth. \u00a0I used the webpage to track and view the wind speed and gusts, air pressure readings, and precipitation levels during Hurricane Matthew. \u00a0I encourage any other amateur geographer out there to utilize this amazing tool to track the next storm in your area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever looked for a free online tool aimed at improving awareness about meteorological events in our atmosphere? \u00a0Look no further than\u00a0Ventusky.com.
