U.S.<\/a><\/em>). \u00a0I have written another brief for the Court, also on rap, but this time with some additional help from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.asrc.cornell.edu\/people\/gosa.cfm\">Travis Gosa<\/a> (Cornell)\u00a0and Michael Render, aka Killer Mike, among others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The brief, which was\u00a0filed this evening (Dec. 21), is posted <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/enielson\/files\/2015\/12\/Taylor-Bell-amicus-FINAL.pdf\">here<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It is written in support of Taylor Bell, a Mississippi high school student who was suspended for recording a rap song that called out two coaches for sexual misconduct (accusations that the school has not denied). \u00a0For more information, check out Adam Liptak&#8217;s <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/12\/21\/us\/politics\/hip-hop-stars-support-mississippi-rapper-in-first-amendment-case.html?smid=tw-nytimes&amp;smtyp=cur&amp;_r=0\">piece<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in the\u00a0<em>New York Times,\u00a0<\/em>which focuses on our brief but also provides important background and context.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In addition to having Killer Mike as an author, we were also (thanks in large part to Mike&#8217;s efforts) able to get a wide range of artists and scholars to lend their name and support to the brief. \u00a0Among the most notable are T.I. and Big Boi, two of the biggest names in rap. \u00a0They deserve a lot of credit for their willingness to stand up for a young man who was unfairly punished for using his art to address an injustice, as do the many others who signed onto our brief.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Hopefully, this will help convince the Court to hear Bell&#8217;s case and in the process show that when hip hop artists stand up for a cause, people listen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last year, I was lead author of\u00a0an\u00a0amicus brief on rap music for the U.S. Supreme Court (in\u00a0Elonis v.
