In this <\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"text-align: center; line-height: 1.7;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/prosecutors-would-rather-read-rap-as-a-threat-than-as-art\/2014\/12\/05\/80e77fc8-7b3e-11e4-b821-503cc7efed9e_story.html\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">op-ed<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"text-align: center; color: #444444; line-height: 1.7;\"> for\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"text-align: center; line-height: 1.7;\">The Washington Post<\/em><span style=\"text-align: center; color: #444444; line-height: 1.7;\">, I draw on that experience, as well as my <\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/raj.sagepub.com\/content\/4\/3\/185\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">research<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"text-align: center; color: #444444; line-height: 1.7;\">, to consider the impact that\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"text-align: center; line-height: 1.7;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2014\/11\/30\/us-usa-court-socialmedia-idUSKCN0JE0FR20141130\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Elonis v. U.S.<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"text-align: center; color: #444444; line-height: 1.7;\">could have on aspiring rappers, especially those who rely on social media to disseminate their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As I argue here, police are spending a surprising amount of time monitoring sites like YouTube and Facebook, often finding rap lyrics or videos that they (mis)interpret as evidence of a crime. \u00a0The results can be disastrous for young artists who are in many cases using this music to escape a life of crime, not perpetuate one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have served, or am currently serving, as an expert witness in five cases involving rap lyrics as evidence, and I have probably consulted on twenty others.
