{"id":1108,"date":"2014-06-25T18:38:16","date_gmt":"2014-06-25T23:38:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/enielson\/?p=1108"},"modified":"2014-06-25T18:40:01","modified_gmt":"2014-06-25T23:40:01","slug":"will-high-court-address-the-prosecution-of-rap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/enielson\/2014\/06\/25\/will-high-court-address-the-prosecution-of-rap\/","title":{"rendered":"Will High Court Address the Prosecution of Rap?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/enielson\/files\/2014\/06\/Supreme-Court.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1107\" title=\"Supreme Court\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/enielson\/files\/2014\/06\/Supreme-Court-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/enielson\/files\/2014\/06\/Supreme-Court-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/enielson\/files\/2014\/06\/Supreme-Court.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In May, I collaborated with <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jou.ufl.edu\/faculty\/facultydetail.asp?id=ccalvert\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Clay Calvert<\/span><\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/socialecology.uci.edu\/faculty\/ckubrin\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Charis Kubrin<\/span><\/a><\/span> on an op-ed for\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/realspin\/2014\/05\/24\/rap-lyrics-or-true-threats-its-time-for-the-high-court-to-decide\/\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Forbes<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/span>, urging the Supreme Court to hear the case of Anthony Elonis, a man who was sent to prison for posting to Facebook menacing rap lyrics directed at his wife and an FBI agent. \u00a0The Court agrees to hear arguments in only a tiny fraction of the cases submitted for consideration, so we were both surprised and excited when it agreed to hear <em>Elonis v.
